Bathrooms have come a long way over the years. In the past, a house only had a single, utilitarian bathroom designed for very basic function. Today, homes have multiple bathrooms with features and uses unheard of until recently. The most popular method of selecting fixtures is to choose a “suite” that you like. A suite coordinates the style and color of all the fixtures for a uniform look. The handles of the sink, tub, and toiler will all be similar in shape and color. The base of the pedestal sink could match the base of the toilet. This gives the bathroom a sense of style, thoughtfulness, and organization.

The toilet is the single most prevalent bathroom fixture both for it’s function and ability to bring together the other elements in the bathroom. Your choice of price, style, and size are nearly limitless. Here are some variations to consider:

Bowl type – Round is the less expensive standard. Elongated is oval shaped and more expensive.
Configuration – A standard two piece freestanding toilet consists of a tank sitting directly on the bowl. A more elaborate two piece separates the tank and hangs it high on the wall for a more Victorian look. A one piece configuration fuses the tank and bowl together for a lower profile and monolithic look. A wall hung toilet is also available but is generally too expensive and reserved for commercial use.
Bowl height – Higher bowl heights were once thought to be only for “handicapped” or “special needs”. More recently manufacturers have been marketing them as a means of preventing leg and back problems.
