Backflow Prevention

Backflow occurs when the flow in your plumbing system reverses direction and moves back against the direction intended. This can bring used water, non-potable water, or other foreign substances up into the plumbing handling your clean water. For example, if you fill the radiator up in your car, the hose contacts the antifreeze, and then there is a pressure drop in your plumbing system, the contaminated water could return to your drinking water.

Several options are available to prevent backflow from occuring. Air gaps can be plumbed in to add a space vertically between a fixture's flood level and an outlet. Double check valves can be installed to ensure water flows only in the intended direction. An atmospheric vacuum breaker (AVB) with a poppit valve can be installed which will close if water pressure drops. You may have some of these devices already installed in your home and you don't even know it.

Mies Plumbing has the knowledge and skills to ensure you and your family have a constant supply of safe drinking water. Give us a call to inspect your home and recommend healthy upgrades for your water system.
