Sump Pumps

If you have flooding or dampness in your basement you may need to invest in a sump pump. A sump pump takes water collected at the lowest point in your basement (called a sump pit) and moves it away from your home. Most sump pumps are hardwired directly into your house's electrical system. There are generally two types: submersible and pedistal. The submersible type is located down in the sump pit itself and is hidden from sight. The pedistal style has the motor mounted above the sump pit where it is more conspicuous but also easier to access for repair.

Like any electro-mechanical device, it is possible for a sump pump to fail. A pump that operates more frequently will be more prone to failure. Some basements have two sump pumps, one primary and one for back up. This ensures that even in the event of such a failure, the basement will stay dry. Some sump pumps also have battery backups so the pump will operate even if the power goes out.
