Septic Tank Maintenance

Septic tank maintenance is much like maintaining anything else. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The inside of your septic tank is alive with beneficial bacteria that shouldn’t be harmed. In fact, you can purchase enzymes and bacteria to add to the tank so it continues to function efficiently.

Some common household items do not decompose and therefore should not be flushed into your septic tank. These items include: oils and fats for cooking, diapers, cigarette butts, and coffee grounds. Flush these items and they will just accumulate until your septic tank is plugged.

Common household chemicals shouldn’t be an issue. Laundry detergent, drain cleaner, bleach, dishwashing liquid and general purpose cleaners should all be OK in moderation. Excessive amounts of these chemicals, however, can harm the beneficial bacteria and lead to a plugged tank.

Toilet paper is another common item that can cause problems depending upon the brand and makeup. Some inexpensive brands don’t break up easily in water and can clog the tank. Don’t try to save a little at the store and end up paying for it later with unnecessary septic tank issues. Get a good quality brand that breaks up easily.

Even if you follow these rules you will eventually need to have the solids in your septic tank cleaned out. This is done by a professional with a tanker truck and pump. This delightful vehicle in some parts of Wisconsin is known as “the honey wagon.” How often this needs to be done will be dependent upon the size of your tank and the amount of solids deposited.
